THAR BE BEASTS ,
[/blockquote]there are all the normal animals that you can think of in the lands of tortall. lions, tigers, the whole works. however, recently there have been different beasts called "immortals" coming into play. seeing as there are many not seen in literature before, i will list all the known beasts in tortall that are out of the norm here. the beasts that are underlined are common. the ones that are not there have only been extremely rare. important needed to know information is bolded, like this note. please rp accordingly.
1. BASILISKa basilisk was an immortal shaped like a tall, elegantly-featured lizard with slit-pupil eyes in the front of its head, varied gray and white skin, and silver talons. it walked upright on its hind legs and often used one hand to carry its tail off the ground. basilisks learned new languages very quickly, and were thus great travelers, as well as lovers of gossip. basilisks possessed a unique array of magical skills, including a sort of screech that could turn to stone any being within range. basilisks were themselves stone-eaters, though they had expressed a preference for rare or aged stone, rather than that created by their own magic. there is only one basilisk currently known, tkaa, teacher and ambassador for the court of tortall.
2. CENTAURScentaurs are an immortal with the lower half of a horse and the upper half of a human. the immortals live in tribes, or herds, in the forests and come out to trade with villages and towns. to keep centaur females pleased males must constantly give them gifts otherwise they may be mobbed or abandoned. they also do not balk at slave trade and have offered to buy strong human females and also regard horses as slaves. centaurs personality depend on the centaur, while some of them prefer to live in peace, others raid villages and commit other crimes. it is also suspected that centaurs will and do cross breed humans (females) and horses (males), and it has been somehow successful. women should be warned and careful.
3. COLDFANGSthese are very large lizards in varying colors, they have very thick skin that is difficult to penetrate and a rattle on its tail. coldfangs are often used to track criminals. they use the essence of the thief to track them. these immortals will also guard a place/object to the end of time, so if you see one, might as well turn around and walk in the opposite direction. rogues be warned, coldfangs may very well mean your demise.
4. DRAGONSthe dragons were a powerful, ancient, and intelligent race of immortals. they were long-lived, and sophisticated magic workers. the dragons re-appeared in the mortal realms after a long absence, beginning when the wild-mage daine became a foster-mother to the newborn dragon skysong in 449 he. daine and her mage-partner numair later had dealings with their ruling body, the dragonmeet, during their visit to the divine realms in 452 he. the dragons lived in the dragonlands, though all dragons went where they choose in any realm, and not even the great gods could prevent them. skysong, also known as kitten, is a dragonet (young dragon) and the only common dragon in tortall, living in the palace. she is normally colored sky blue, but can change her color at will, or to reflect her moods. her eyes have been described as having slit-pupils, like a cat, and are either blue or amber-colored. her body is two feet long, with an additional foot of tail. She can walk on all four legs, or just her hind legs. skysong is still an infant dragon, and will remain one for at least another fifteen years, therefore her wings are flightless. she has magical abilities controlled by whistling. kitten can whistle locks open, and can neaten a person's appearance. she cannot communicate mind-to-mind with people because she is too young, but she can speak the dragon language. skysong can, even as an infant, force wyverns to do her will.
5. GRIFFINSgriffins are a race of immortals that resemble huge birds of prey with cat parts, and are over six feet tall at the shoulder. they live and nest on coastlines, and their diet consists of fish and sea mammals such as dolphins. humans cannot lie in the presence of griffins, and historically they have been hunted for this valuable property and imprisoned on human shields. griffin feathers have many useful properties, and are much sought-after by humans. arrows fletched with griffin feathers are more accurate, and when worn near the eyes and ears, the feathers allow the wearer to see through magical illusions. griffin adults have the ability to magically detect the scent of their offspring on humans. if they encounter someone who has handled a stolen baby griffin, even years later, they will kill that person. cages cannot contain a griffin, as even infants have the ability to rust metal, enabling them to escape. griffins are very intelligent, and don't have a very high opinion of humans, but are not inherently dangerous to humans who leave them alone. griffins may not be killed under Tortallan law, but are often the victims of poachers.
6. HURROKShurroks are generally described as winged horses similar to a pegasus, but with claws instead of hooves and the eyes and teeth of a predator. their name is believed to have originated in the slurring of the words 'horse-hawk'.it would be intelligent to not try and catch them and ride them. you'll be eaten.
7. KRAKEN(S?)the kraken is a powerful immortal resembling an octopus, only with many more tentacles, each of which is a mile long, and a body that is a mile and a half across. it is unclear if there is a kraken species, or only a single kraken. the only known kraken is in the mortal realms, living in the depths of the emerald ocean and preying on ships. he was passed over by the mages who imprisoned the immortals in the divine realms at the beginning of the human era.
8. MERFOLKmerfolk are a sea-dwelling species of immortal currently inhabiting the eastern lands. there are merfolk colonies along the west coast of tortall, the largest at blue harbor. they are on good terms with the tortallans. the young ones are nice, yes, but they do forget you don't breath underwater. do be smart.
9. OGRESogres are a humanoid species of immortal. they vary in height from about 5 to 12 feet, and have aqua colored skin and blue blood. they have pointed ears, bulging eyes, and yellow peg-like teeth; they have hair on their head, necks, and shoulders. ogres, along with other immortals, began reappearing in the eastern lands around 449 he. although many ogres fought and stole from humans, other clans merely wanted to find a place to settle down and farm. some ogres love farming, and they did not have enough space to farm in the divine realms.it would be wise not to harm a plant in front of an ogre, trust us.
10. SPIDRENSspidrens are a fearsome race of immortals which resemble a giant spider with a human head. spidrens hunt at night, because their webs glow in the dark. they subsist by eating animals and humans. when fighting humans or other immortals, spidrens wield weapons including axes. though intelligent, the spidrens are intractably vicious and no humans have been able to make peace with them.
11. STORMWINGSa stormwing is an immortal with a body half human, and half steel bird. their creation was prompted by a woman dreaming of something to show human beings the ravages of war without glorifying them. stormwing society is organized in named nations, ruled by a system that combines nobility, monarchy and meritocracy. the king or queen of a stormwing nation can be deposed in battle. while they have powerful magic, it is very different from the human gift. it is difficult for stormwings to breed, so they value children of all species. the stormwings have human heads and chests, and bird wings and feet. their bird parts are made from steel and they are capable of flight. they are similar in appearance to harpies but are not exclusively female. they are immortals, so they die only when they are slain, but never from old age, disease, or starvation. they were brought into the mortal world when the barrier between tortall and the divine realms was breached. by nature, they are often described as despicable, feeding off the fear and terror created by the war, and desecrating the corpses of the dead. stormwings urinate on corpses, cake them in dung, and then roll in the mess. arrows fletched with stormwing feathers are able to penetrate any magical shield. it is uncertain whether or not the stormwings are personally responsible for their behavior, as it is their nature, not their will, that they would feed off war and death. the Stormwings are also used to portray a strong message against the glory of war and a soldier's death. the woman who dreamed up the stormwings (as all immortals are the result of a mortal's dreaming in the tortall universe), had done so after witnessing the tragedy and destruction of war. it had been her hope that if kings and soldiers alike could think of the stormwings before they went to war, they would rethink their decision knowing that the immortals would feed off their dead and the fear that they create. stormwings are not to be handled alone. it's a death trap.
12. TAUROSEStauroses are a humanoid species of Immortal, resembling a powerfully-built human male with some features of a bull. unlike many other types of Immortals, tauroses have very limited intelligence and only one purpose. wherever they go, they rape and kill human females. there are no female tauroses, so usually men are not caught in a rape issue. key word: usually.
13. UNICORNSunicorns are an equine species of immortal. there are two varieties of unicorn, the harmless type, and flesh-eating unicorns. saliva from a flesh-eating unicorn is a deadly and nearly undetectable poison. there is also a condition known as "unicorn fever," though its exact provenance is unknown
14. KUDARUNGSwinged horse, or kudarung, are sacred animals to both kyprioth and the raka. like all Immortals they were banished to the divine realms for 400 years. these horses are related to hurrocks and both have bat wings to keep them alive. winged horses are throughout the eastern lands size ranging from real horses to ponies as small as your hand.
15. WYVERNSwyverns are a pernicious species of immortals who often attacked tortall during the immortals war. wyverns are giant, winged, legless lizards who breath a yellow fog that gives humans a dry, long-lasting cough and makes the eyes burn and blur. as distant, lesser cousins of dragons, wyverns must obey dragons of any age. thus noted, should you see one, skysong must be informed immediately.
